Alice Hyde Medical Center to Become Fifth Hospital in UVM Health Network
UVM Health Network Votes to Pursue Affiliation with Alice Hyde Medical Center
Five Hospital Affiliation would include Alice Hyde Medical Center, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, Elizabethtown Community Hospital, Central Vermont Medical Center and UVM Medical Center
The UVM Health Network Board of Trustees voted yesterday to enter into a formal affiliation with Alice Hyde Medical Center and expand its network to include a total of five hospitals in Northern New York and Vermont.
Pending due diligence and regulatory approval, Alice Hyde Medical Center will become the fifth hospital in The University of Vermont Health Network joining:
- The University of Vermont Medical Center
- The University of Vermont Health Network – Central Vermont Medical Center
- The University of Vermont Health Network – Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital
- The University of Vermont Health Network – Elizabethtown Community Hospital
In voting to pursue this affiliation, Alice Hyde Medical Center will become part of a coordinated, highly integrated health care system focused on improving quality, increasing access and lowering costs of health care in the communities served by the hospitals in Vermont and New York.
“Becoming a part of The University of Vermont Health Network is a wonderful opportunity for Alice Hyde Medical Center and the thousands of North Country residents we serve,” said Douglas F. DiVello, MPH, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer of Alice Hyde Medical Center. “For the past 18 years, Alice Hyde has been an affiliate of Fletcher Allen - now The University of Vermont Medical Center - and has seen the tremendous benefits of this collaboration. Formalizing and extending this partnership will expand our communities’ access to high quality services closer to home.”
The vote to bring Alice Hyde Medical Center into the Network strengthens and formalizes the Malone institution’s relationship with CVPH and The University of Vermont Medical Center. It will build upon the existing collaboration through which cardiology, vascular surgery, and pulmonology providers are making services available in Malone, and continue the many years of clinical affiliation that Alice Hyde Medical Center has had with The University of Vermont Medical Center, formerly Fletcher Allen Health Care.
“This is an exciting new milestone in the long collaborative relationship between The University of Vermont Medical Center and Alice Hyde Medical Center,” said John Brumsted, M.D., President and CEO of The University of Vermont Health Network and CEO of The University of Vermont Medical Center. “The health care services they provide to the people in the region they serve will bring added value to the network, which in turn, will give the hospital access to more resources to augment that care.”
Under this new relationship, Alice Hyde will become UVM Health Network - Alice Hyde Medical Center while remaining a free standing hospital with its own board, management, workforce, licensure, medical staff and endowment. It will be subject to the Network’s oversight and have representation on the Network’s Board of Trustees. Alice Hyde representatives will participate in developing and implementing system-wide initiatives and programs that promote their shared objectives such as:
- increasing access and improving the quality of health care services through joint clinical initiatives,
- centralizing administrative functions to reduce costs and improve efficiency,
- engaging in regional planning to address regional health care needs,
- integrating clinical services to improve quality and access.
“Every day we see the positive results of this collaborative effort. Together we are indeed stronger. The addition of Alice Hyde Medical Center to our Network presents new opportunities to improve the quality of care provided in our region,” explained Stephens Mundy, President and CEO of Community Providers, Inc. and UVM Health Network - CVPH.
Since its inception in 2012, the Network has proven to be an effective partnership:
- Saving $6,000,000 in Network-wide expenses
- Integrating Cardiovascular Services across the Network to improve quality and offer services as close to home as possible and,
- Launching a Family Medicine Residency Program that will ultimately improve access across the region to primary care
It is expected that the affiliation will be finalized by the end of 2015.
